Polar Bear Story II

There are only two months to hunt for mother polar bears in a year. The mainly eat seals and they can eat 100 pound in one meal so that they can grow and gain weights quickly. They can gain a couple of hundred pound within a couple of weeks. They get pregnant and no seals to eat in June every year so that they have to come back to their camping ground and stay there until December to give birth. They take their baby bears to hunt the next February and march. The mother bears need to give breast-feeding to babies all the time but no food for almost 9 months. It impresses me that I feel mother bear is the greatest mom in this planet.

The camping ground is only open to public for 25 days a year with guests limited to 20. The camping ground will be shut down immediately on the following day of the 25 days by staffs working at Canada National Park. It will reopen three days before to the public.

And then, mother bear will take the baby bear to hunt near the sea. There are two layers in bear's cave. One is in the snow and one is in the earth that is the permanent cave. They will come back to find the same cave to give birth next year at the same time. I reserved also to see them next year.

Every morning, we need to take the snowcat for two hours to a big lake. We drive across the lake. There are many bear caves near the lake. Mother bear usually gives birth in December. And the baby bear will come out from the cave to see the wolrd on the following year's February or March. What I will do is waiting them to come out from the cave.

We waited 11 days and we saw bears for 7 days. The average temperature is minus 30 degree Celsius. The lowest temperature is minus 53 degree Celsius with the wind. It was incredible cold out there. If you expose your finger outside, your finger will become numb within 10 seconds. I had the frostbite on my nose because I was not able to clean my nasal mucus when I was shooting. We had to take the batteries back to the car for every 10 minutes to keep it working. The adjusting knob of the tripod was frozen too. I stayed outside for over 10 hours everyday and only had sandwiches for lunch. We came back to camping ground after 9pm for dinner. I really cannot stand sandwiches any more because I ate too much in the 11 days. My feet still felt cold even though I worn a protective boots that can resist minus 120 degree Celsius. No one left because we might meet bears at any minute. I didn't feel that cold when I went to Antarctic region. Maybe it was summer at that time.
