1. Where does polar bear live?

They live in the seashore with seals in arctic rim area. There are five countries which have polar bears. They are Alaska United States, Canada, Russia, Norway and Greenland.

 
2. Is polar bear endangered?

Scientists predict that 2/3 polar bears may disappear in the middle of 21 century due to the climate changes and arctic warming. We can save polar bears by eliminating the emission of CO2. The biggest threat is the less and less ice, followed by the pollution, illegal hunting and industrial pollutions. Hunting could be another big threat to polar bear.
2005, PBSG indicated that the lack of ice will cause the extinction of polar bear.
May 2008, ministry of internal affairs of United States listed polar bear as the endangered species. Canada and Russia will pay more attention on polar bears.
Scientists in PBSG 2009 indicated that the number of 8 species of polar bears out of 19 species is declining, 3 species stay the same and one species is increasing.

There are about 20000 to 25000 polar bears in our planet.

5. How big is it?

Usually, the matured male bear is about 351kg to over 544kg (775 pound to 1200 pound). The matured female is only 150kg to 295kg (330 pound to 650 pound). The biggest male bear in record is 2209 pound.

 
6. How do they live in arctic environment?

Polar bear like the arctic region. The temperature can drop below minus 45 degree Celsius. Polar bear has unique hair with cavity. It can prevent water and keep warm. They also have the fat deposit. Small ears and small tail can prevent to lose calories. In fact, obesity is the biggest problem for polar bear other than the cold weather, especially when they are in motion.

 
7. What do they eat?

Polar bear is carnivore. 98% is carnivorous. They eat seals particularly the ringed seal. They also eat bearded seal, pagophilus gray seal and hooded seal. Other than that, they eat walrus, Beluga whale, seabird, fishes, small sized mammals and sometimes they eat carrions.
Polar bears do not keep their food, they hunt and eat the fat and go. It offers free lunch to those lazy animals such as arctic fox. The fat is even more important than flesh to polar bears since fat can keep warm and keep energy. Polar bear also eat some berries and roots or stem. They will eat the seaweed to supply minerals and vitamins.

 
8. What is the position in the food chain in nature?

Polar bear is at the very top of the food chain. They control the density of their species by eating seals.

 
9. How long does it can live?

Wild polar bear can live 25 to 30 years long. Captive bear will live longer. The longest longevity is a female captive bear in Detroit zoo. She was 45 years old in 1999.

 
10. How many babies does one mother bears have at one time?

Usually two baby bears but it could have one or three. They mother bears give birth at the age of 4 to 8 mostly at 5 to 6. Polar bear has the lowest reproduction among mammals, usually 5 babies in their life.

 
11. When and where does mother bear give birth?

Mother bears will give birth at their cave in November or December. The pregnant female bears need to eat a lot in April and May and after that, they will dig a big hole as their caves along the hill or in the snow at the end of October or beginning of November.

13. What does the baby bears look like when they were born?

It looks lie a big white mouse when they were born, 30cm to 35cm long, 600g-700g weight. They cannot open eyes and the whole body is covered by the soft hair. Mother bear feeds their babies so that they can grow up quickly in the cave. They will have 10kg to 15kg when they come out of the cave with their mothers in spring.

 
14. When the baby can live independently?

The baby bears need to live with their mothers for two to three years before they can live independently. Their sexual maturity is at the age 5 or 6. The male bear will grow to mature size at the age 9 or 10. What they need to learn from their mothers is to live under the worst environment condition in the planet. They are called sub-adult before copulation.

 
15. Does polar bear hibernate?

Polar bear does not hibernate completely. They sleep with caution. They can react quickly when they have the emergency. They don't eat for couple of months but not entire winter.

 
16. Is there any other species population of polar bear?

Yes. There are currently total 19 different species of polar bear.
